1 Bioinformatics Scientist high-throughput data analysis and statistical modeling

The MDC Berlin-Buch is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers, and its focus is biomedical research in the areas of Cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases, Cancer and Function and Dysfunction of Nervous System. The Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) of the MDC expands and adds systems biology approaches to decipher the ‘post-transcriptional regulatory code’ and to directly integrate it with other major cellular and gene regulatory mechanisms.

Description:

As a bioinformatics scientist you will be a member of the Scientific Bioinformatics Platform and report to the head of the platform, Dr. Altuna Akalin. You will be responsible for data analysis and method development for genomics data sets including but not limited to high-throughput sequencing datasets. You will be interacting and collaborating with BIMSB research groups and external collaborators within defined national and international consortiums, as well as supporting research in computational epigenomics and gene regulation within the platform.

Skills:

Applicants should have PhD degree in computational genomics, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or equivalent. We are looking for talented researchers with a proven track record in bioinformatics, specifically in computational genomics. However, applicants who have strong background in statistics and programming (e.g. PhD in statistics with relevant publications) are also welcome to apply and will be given special consideration, even though they do not have much experience in bioinformatics. The ideal candidate should have excellent programming skills for data analysis preferably in R and in one of the scripting languages such as Python. In addition, experience in C/C++ would be beneficial and highly desirable. Statistics and machine learning course work and/or demonstrated application of those in previous research is also necessary. Experience and/or interest in database technologies (SQL and/or noSQL) and traditional high-performance computing clusters would be a plus.

The candidate should be familiar with fundamentals of molecular biology and fluent in spoken and written English. The technical expertise is complemented by essential soft skills, the ability to communicate and work in teams, flexibility and targeted action.
