Lead Developer for large-scale cell/tissue image processing pipeline

Description

The laboratory of Prof. Prisca Liberali at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) provides a world-leading research environment in applying image-based systems biology to investigate fundamental cell biological and developmental questions in 3D organoid cultures. We are now looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with a strong vision and with leadership capabilities to drive the further development of our computational platform that supports these research activities. The position will initially be for two years, with a firm perspective for long-term employment in case of good fit and productivity.

Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for the administration and the further development of our software and computational platform that enables high-performance computing and image processing of cell and tissue images on high performance computing. By becoming the effective lead developer of this open-source platform, the candidate should establish him/herself as an internationally recognized developer in the field of large-scale cellular image processing, enabling not only the members in the host laboratory, but researchers around the world to apply image-based systems biology approaches to their projects.

Qualifications:
For this position, we are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong vision on the future of large-scale cellular image processing and image-based systems biology. The candidate has thorough training in the use and development of computational approaches (e.g. through a Bachelors/Masters degree in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or signal processing). Furthermore, experience in molecular cell biology, microscopy, and cell and tissue imaging, possibly through a PhD, is highly appreciated.

The ideal candidate is moreover fluent in multiple computer programming languages, in particular in Bash, MATLAB, Python, JavaScript, and C++, and can easily adapt to heterogeneous high-performance computing environments. Having experience with web frameworks (frontend and backend), SQL databases, SPARK/YARN and modern cloud technologies (e.g. OpenStack), and high-performance computing (e.g. SLURM) is a plus. 

Importantly, the candidate should have excellent communication and networking skills, be able to interact with a heterogeneous group of researchers in quantitative cell biology and image-based systems biology, be structured, have a clear vision, and demonstrate leadership capabilities.
