Postdoc researcher Health Technology Assessment in Cancer Survivorship

Your function within the department

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) is an independent research institute located in Amsterdam. The Institute covers all major areas of molecular and cellular cancer biology, with special emphasis on immunology, cancer cell biology and translational research; increasingly health technology assessment (HTA) and health economic studies are performed in early stages of research that can lead to clinical innovations. The Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital form an comprehensive cancer center, combining a research laboratory and a hospital under one roof in a single, independent organization This research is focused on improving cancer treatment through imaging and molecular diagnostics, new medicine, immunotherapy, improved operating techniques, more effective radiotherapy, and combinations of these, HTA, epidemiology and psychosocial research.

Postdoc researcher (32-36 hours/week)
“Health Technology Assessment in Cancer Survivorship”.
Within the research group of Prof. Wim H. van Harten we search for a talented and ambitious individual to conduct HTA research in cancer and survivorship in particular, to support projects from the clinic (Antoni van Leeuwenhoek), and write grant proposals.
At the division of psychosocial research and epidemiology (PSOE), we perform research regarding cancer rehabilitation and survivorship. This often has a relation with the recently opened “Quality of Life Center”. In many of these projects, Health technology Assessments are included to enable reimbursement for e.g. new rehabilitation or psychosocial interventions. Examples of (recent) projects are:

  1. PABLO (A randomized controlled trial of an internet-based tailored physical activity support program in breast and prostate cancer survivors)
  2. EVA online (randomized controlled trial of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment-induced menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors)
  3. Evaluation of immediacy of retreatment decision-making for prostate cancer patients enrolled in general practitioner led or specialist led survivorship care
  4. Clinical impact of dedicated MRI staging of ovarian cancer patients
  5. GERSOC (GERiatric Screening in the treatment of elderly patients with Ovarian Carcinoma)
  6. Long term utilities for immunotherapy in advanced melanoma

Since the beginning of November 2017, our “Quality of Life Center ” has been opened, a rehabilitation facility  for our cancer survivors, but also with services to support our patients before and during treatment. We would like you to take an active role in the ongoing and planned research activities which will be a pillar of our institute.
Besides the focus on cancer survivorship, many consults come from the clinic (Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital), where we are facilitating e.g. head room calculations for grant proposals and the accompanying textual proposals for newly developing, and stimulating HTAs according our research line in (early) Health Technology Assessment in the NKI-AVL.
Supervisors for the projects are, besides the project specific PI’s, Valesca Retèl PhD. and Prof. Dr. Wim van Harten MD PhD.
Inspiring international atmosphere Approximately 550 people work in the NKI research laboratory and many of the clinicians are involved in research. Work discussions, lectures and seminars are inspiring and a large number of non-Dutch post-docs, students and staff members contribute to the stimulating and international atmosphere of the Institute. The group of Wim van Harten is positioned within the department of Psychosocial and Epidemiological research (PSOE) and currently involves 2 postdocs, 5 PhDs and a number of master students involved in health technology assessment/health economics and mathematic modelling.
