Postdoctoral Researcher in the Epigenetics of complex diseases and traits group

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalized medicine at the Helsinki Institute for Life Science of the University of Helsinki. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research and technology and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information in personalized health and medicine, individualized cancer medicine, and novel imaging-based biomedicine.

FIMM is a member of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, together with the Danish Research Institute for Translational Neuroscience (DANDRITE), Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), and Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM). The Partnership is dedicated to excellence in molecular medicine and life science research that investigates the molecular basis of disease and explores molecular and genetic based treatments, with each institute bringing a unique set of expertise, skills, and facilities encompassing the recognized research strengths of the EMBL.

FIMM postdoctoral researchers benefit from the FIMMPOD professional developmental program, which aims to enhance research experiences and career opportunities (

FIMMPOD is currently seeking outstanding candidates for the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher in the Epigenetics of complex diseases and traits group

The Epigenetics of Complex Diseases and Traits research group led by Miina Ollikainen is focused on understanding epigenetic variation and its relation to complex traits and diseases, such as smoking, alcohol use, gestational diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The research of the group applies computational approaches utilizing genome-wide DNA methylation, histone modification and genotype data, and wealth of phenotypic data from the well-characterized Finnish Twin Cohort Study participants, Gestational diabetes sample eMOM, and large-scale population-based cohorts. The aim of the group is to understand biological mechanisms linking environmental exposures and complex phenotypes, producing reliable biomarker signatures and potential intervention targets as well as identification of epigenetic variants which could be used in risk prediction.

The Epigenetics of Complex Diseases and Traits research group is currently seeking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher, with strong computational and analytical skills to develop and apply computational approaches to analyze, model and integrate omics data sets to assess the contribution of genome and epigenome to complex traits. The postdoc will be jointly responsible of coordinating the projects and supervising the PhD students, and will participate in national and international collaborations.

Qualification and experience:

The successful candidate holds a doctoral degree in life science, statistics or computational sciences, and has good computational and programming skills, a solid publication track record and strong background in computational (epi)genetics or epidemiological studies, and in analysis of omics data sets. Excellent knowledge in epigenetics and genetics, and prior experience in supervising, teaching and team leading is highly appreciated. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English and have good scientific writing skills.

Salary & contract:

A two year contract is available for the position, starting as soon as possible, with a possibility for extension pending successful review. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the Finnish university salary (YPJ) system depending on the credentials, previous experience and performance of the postdoctoral researcher. Normal starting salary is 3,326 euros. There will be a trial period of 6 months.

How to apply:

Application deadline is 28.10.2018 at 23.59 EEST. Applications are submitted by completing the application form and submitting a CV and a cover letter as a single PDF file (max 5 pages) in English at the University of Helsinki open positions page.  Review of applications will begin after the close of the call and applicants will be notified of the results of the preliminary review in early November.
