As a first step, the ten founding EU-LIFE partners have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2013 to define basic operating principles. In January 2014, partners have signed a more detailed Consortium Agreement, regulating all decision-making procedures, and main action points in the Alliance.

The network is coordinated by a chair who is elected by the members for a period of two years. The chair is supported by a co-chair, who is also elected by the members. The founding group members have elected CRG as chair for the first period until 2014, and VIB as co-chair. Currently, for the mandate of 2018-2020 Institut Curie is acting as Chair and The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) as Co-Chair.

EU-LIFE also selected a Coordinator to implement and centralise all activities. The Coordinator is based at the EU-LIFE office located at the CRG in Barcelona, Spain.

The different activities of the network are carried out by dedicated working groups, formed by experts from the member institutions. Each Working Group elects a Chair, who sits together with the Board of Directors twice a year to review all activities.
