Protein-protein interactions versus ligand-receptor interactions

Investigating interactions between proteins is an important aspect to gain insights into the function of proteins. Many different methods and technologies have been developed to identify, characterize and modulate protein-protein interactions (PPI). This training will review both in vitro and cell-based techniques to produce PPI data and highlight the respective advantages and disadvantages. Dependent on the research question you have, one technique might be more suited than another and we aim to provide some guidelines on how to choose wisely. Special attention will be given to studying extracellular and membrane associated PPI in comparison to intracellular PPI. In a second session, we will discuss methods to identify molecules that interfere with PPI, both ways, inhibiting PPI's or promoting interaction. These molecules function as versatile tools that disturb the natural function of the PPI they target and can as such reveal the down-stream signaling. Of course, molecules that can modulate medically relevant protein contacts might become important in diagnostics and therapeutics. In a third session, the trainers will address questions/issues that were raised by the participants, to stimulate the interaction and to make the training as relevant as possible for your own research. We will end the day with a keynote talk that will integrate several of the methodologies that were discussed during the day into a biological story. For more information:
