Head of Technology Centre
The University of Helsinki is a top 50 international research university with a strong life science research where an international academic community with a critical outlook and a creative attitude is aiming to build a better future together. HiLIFE, Helsinki Institute of Life Science, builds on existing strengths to spearhead life science research and infrastructure across campuses in order to create an attractive international environment for solving grand challenges in health and environment. The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), a unit of HiLIFE with more than 250 staff, is a research institute focused on human genomics and personalised medicine. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.
FIMM is currently seeking
Head of Technology Centre
We seek an experienced candidate to be responsible for the operation, enhancement and supervision of a set of nationally utilized infrastructures at the Institute of Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM). The existing Technology Centre currently consists of ten core units each with a senior scientific technology lead and with a total of 40 staff members. These core units include expert teams supporting genomics, single-cell technologies, high-throughput screening, metabolomics, high-content imaging, digital and molecular pathology, extracellular vesicle analysis, bioinformatics and scientific computing. In addition to day-to-day technology center management, the responsibilities will include responsibility for the TC budget and pricing, representing the TC and FIMM in local, national and international biotechnology fora, fund-raising for further development, and enhancing close collaboration between Tech Centre and FIMM research programs.
The candidate will also participate in further future development of the broader HiLIFE infrastructure program wherein diverse and complementary core facilities across life science units at the University provide an integrated service model for researchers throughout the university, nationally and internationally (www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science/hilife-research-infrastructures).
The Technology Centre Head will have the possibility to carry out his/her own research as part of the FIMM research profile, and will have access to the facilities and research contacts of the outstanding environment of the Biomedicum Helsinki and as part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. This research component may be only up to 25% of the working time.
We value candidates with strong leadership skills and vision in creating a sustainable and efficient infrastructure platform that will serve the community optimally. We are seeking candidates with an excellent track record in leading technology infrastructures in an academic or industry setting and who have current experience or research interest in human genetics/genomics, functional genomics, molecular medicine, bioinformatics or medical systems biology. In addition to a keen interest in technology development and management, particular additional value will be given to candidates with significant international contacts and familiarity with recent trends in state-of-the-art research technologies in the fields relevant to FIMM. The TC Head will work closely with the Director of FIMM in supporting the evolution of existing platforms and integration of new technologies required by the research community, and will additionally work closely with the HiLIFE Director and management team on the development of an overall strategy for HiLIFE Infrastructures.
The working language of FIMM as HiLIFE unit is English, so excellent communication skills in English are required. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the University salary system (either level 7-8 for research staff or level 12 for other staff). Position is initially for 5 years, starts as soon as possible upon mutual agreement and may be renewed upon evaluation and mutual agreement. The post will include a trial period of 6 months.

Names of three references should be included. We also request an outline for the vision of new technology development and research service operations for a national center (max 2-3 pages) which emphasizes support for research with translational, medical and public health impact.
