The Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (IMBB FORTH - Greece) becomes a full member of EU-LIFE

The Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (IMBB FORTH), a leading research institute in Greece, becomes EU-LIFE Full Member after joining the alliance as Associate Partner one year ago. With this strengthened membership, EU-LIFE proceeds with its expansion plan and consolidates its broad representativeness across Europe.

EU-LIFE is honoured to welcome IMBB FORTH as a Full Member of the alliance, which has reached 15 leading research centres in the life sciences from 15 European countries since its creation in 2013. With the full membership of IMBB FORTH, EU-LIFE consolidates its expansion plans and broad representativeness across Europe.

Welcoming the decision, Dr Iannis Talianidis, Director of the IMBB FORTH, said: " This is the natural step in our commitment to the alliance. During the time IMBB has been an Associate Partner of EU-LIFE the institute benefited of fruitful collaborations with the other top-level research institutes of the alliance and participated actively in EU-LIFE’s initiatives”.

“It is extremely important for us to ensure that EU-LIFE encapsulates a wide critical mass of leading scientific institutes across Europe, representing many different realities and ecosystems that together make the European research and innovation “, said Rene Medema, Chair of the EU-LIFE Board of Directors.

The IMBB FORTH is one of the most prominent life science research institutions in Greece, with an impressive record of scientific achievements, state of the art infrastructure and a broad range of research, innovation and educational activities. The Institute was founded in 1984, with the purpose of establishing a Research Institute in Greece capable of performing internationally competitive research in the field of Molecular Biology for the understanding of basic life processes and the parallel development of biotechnology applications. This goal determines the long-standing mission of IMBB to pursue cutting-edge research and promote scientific excellence.

Historically, IMBB FORTH researchers have been very active in shaping scientific policies at both national and European level. Among the most visible examples are the contribution of the founder and first director of IMBB Fotis Kafatos in leading EMBL and shaping ERC, the participation of IMBB researchers in ERC Scientific Council and various EMBO and EU committees.
