Meet EU-LIFE at ESOF 2020
Join us to discuss Gender diversity, Open Science and genomic medicine at ESOF in Trieste.
ESOF - EuroScience Open Forum is the largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe where scientists, innovators, policy makers, business people and the general public discuss, debate and share knowledge.
The EU-LIFE members will be involved in three sessions during ESOF 2020 - EuroScience Open Forum which takes place on 2-6 September in Trieste. The theme for ESOF 2020 is: “Freedom for science, science for freedom". Due to Covid-19, this year's ESOF is a hybrid event with delegates participating either in place in Trieste or online.
The EU-LIFE representatives will be involved in the following sessions:
Inclusion and gender diversity in research environments: a little less conversation, a little more action please - 4 Sep 8:30-10:30, Virtual Room 2
For a long time, the prevailing attitude towards gender diversity in research among researchers and policy makers was that good research is ‘neutral’. These beliefs have now been challenged by extensive scientific evidence, which shows that inclusion and gender diversity in research in reality are hindered by extensive hidden conscious and unconscious biases. The panel will discuss and take questions on existing drivers, progress that has been made and remaining barriers that need to be overcome to achieve inclusivity in research.
Marta Agostinho, EU-LIFE Coordinator, one of the three panellists, will introduce institutional change as a driver for gender equality based on the LIBRA project experience. More information here
EU-OSPP: Open Science from Recommendations to Practical implementation - 4 Sep 12:00-13:30, Euroscience Virtual room
The European Open Science Policy Platform, EU-OSPP is a group of experts representing 25 stakeholder organizations across Open Science, who have been advising the EC on addressing the challenges to the implementation of Open Science in Europe. This session will summarise progress across Europe on the uptake of the recommendations made and to discuss and debate the future vision for Open Science in Europe by 2030, as proposed in the OSPP’s final report published in May 2020.
Michela Bertero, Head of the International and Scientific Affairs Unit of the EU-LIFE partner CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain) and EU-LIFE representative at the EU-OSPP will present EU-LIFE perspective on the key takeaways from the report. More information here
Genomic medicine: novel ethics and society challenges - 3 Sep 10:15-11:45, Virtual room 1
The delivery of genomic medicine poses new ethical, societal and legal challenges. The workshop brings together leaders from research, health care, patient communities, and ethics. They will discuss with the workshop ́s participants issues surrounding the translation of genomic into medicine and public health from different views.
Michela Bertero, Head of the International and Scientific Affairs Unit of the EU-LIFE partner CRG (Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain) and Project Coordinator of the ORION open science project, will be one of the workshop ́s participants. More information here
