Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping how research is conducted, managed and communicated. Its development and use offer significant opportunities for scientific progress and innovation, while also raising important questions concerning aspects such as research integrity, transparency, confidentiality, intellectual property and authorship.
EU-LIFE works at the European policy level and across its community to support a responsible and human-centred approach to AI in science and research. We bring the perspective of independent research institutes in the life sciences into European discussions, and, at the same time, create opportunities for researchers and research professionals to exchange experiences and explore how AI can be used responsibly in different areas of scientific and institutional practice.
EU-LIFE’s policy work on AI
EU-LIFE actively participates in the ERA Action “Facilitating and accelerating the responsible use of AI in science in the EU”, under the ERA Policy Agenda 2025–2027. The Action brings together the European Commission, Member States, associated countries and research and innovation stakeholders to align policies, pool resources and expertise, and support the responsible uptake of AI across European science and research. It also contributes to the development of the Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE), a virtual European institute coordinating resources for scientists developing and applying AI.
In November 2025, EU-LIFE participated in the first meeting of the ERA Action and in the AI in Science Summit in Copenhagen, organised by the European Commission and the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU. These discussions marked the official start of the Action and addressed policy coordination, shared resources and expertise, and the development of RAISE as a common European asset. Following up these first steps, EU-LIFE contributes to the ERA Action activities and outcomes such as the update of the ERA Living Guidelines on the responsible use of Generative AI in research published in May 2026.
Supporting dialogue across the research community
EU-LIFE contributes to discussions on AI in science in the wider research community, and also creates spaces to examine how AI is transforming research and to discuss its scientific, ethical, legal and societal implications.

- The event EU-LIFE UTOPIA Conference 2024: A Social Innovation Experiment with Artificial Intelligence, co-located with the EU-LIFE Community Meeting 2024, was organised by André Rendeiro, Jörg Menche and Giulio Superti-Furga, and hosted by CeMM (Apr 2024)
Sharing practices across the EU-LIFE community
AI is relevant not only to scientific research, but also to many areas of research management and institutional activity. Across the EU-LIFE community, working groups create opportunities for members to exchange experiences, discuss practical applications and reflect on responsible approaches to the use of AI.
These activities include peer-to-peer practice sharing, policy overviews and sessions led by internal and external experts. Topics range from the use of AI in research management and grant support to training and recruitment, science communication, and technology transfer. Sessions also explore practical tools and use cases, including ways to improve day-to-day work and organisational efficiency, as well as examples of institutional collaboration with AI providers.
The annual community meetings provide a particularly valuable setting for this work, allowing members to engage directly with experts, explore questions in greater depth and connect practical experience with wider policy, organisational and societal discussions on the role of AI in science.
